COX AUTOMOTIVE UK ENTERS VEHICLE SERVICES MARKET WITH MAJOR ACQUISITION

Cox Automotive UK, a leading automotive services group, has today announced the acquisition of 100% of the share capital of C Walton Ltd (CWL), one of the UK’s key providers of vehicle services for manufacturers, fleet operators, dealers and daily rental companies.

As part of the deal, Cox Automotive UK has acquired CWL’s vehicle services business which operates from three locations in Bruntingthorpe (Leicestershire), Wyton (Cambridgeshire) and Long Bennington (Lincolnshire). The deal also includes CWL’s proving ground and events businesses.

CWL offers an extensive range of fleet management and vehicle services on a mass scale including new and used car vehicle preparation (wash, valeting, imagery) and reconditioning (Smart and full bodyshop repairs); defleet services including inspections and MOT; logistics and storage; as well as a range of in-life services for cars, vans and trucks plus full support for Electric vehicle handling.

The acquisition will therefore significantly increase both the scale and scope of wholelife vehicle services that Cox Automotive UK can offer new clients to support physical and online auction programmes.

Martin Forbes, CEO at Cox Automotive UK, said: “Although we provide some vehicle services to support existing customers with their remarketing and defleet strategies, we have wanted to significantly increase the range and scope of wholelife vehicle services available to new clients for some time.
“We have long-admired how CWL operates in this market, growing its business through delivering high quality wholelife vehicle services. With the addition of CWL, Cox Automotive UK will now be able offer all aspects of a used car remarketing programme, including vehicle services on a much larger scale, to support both existing and potential new customers.”

Up to 200,000 vehicles a year are processed by CWL at its Bruntingthorpe site and it also provides secure storage for over 25,000 vehicles. CWL invested in a new purpose-built vehicle services facility at the Wyton site in 2019 in response to increased customer demand.

Over the last decade, CWL has seen its business grow from strength-to-strength in the vehicle services market, becoming one of the market leaders in the field.  The company has invested in leading-edge technology and new infrastructure to drive operational efficiency which has helped it establish a reputation for service delivery excellence.

Forbes added: “The used vehicle market in the UK is rapidly-changing. We are responding by transforming our business to meet the needs of a changing wholesale and retail marketplace. The launch of Dealer Auction is a great example of how we are leading the market when it comes to digital wholesale and we are also at the forefront of delivering new mobility solutions.”
John Walton, commercial director of CWL, commented: “We are very proud of our heritage as a family-owned, independent business. When Cox Automotive approached us to acquire the business a major factor in deciding to sell was that they shared similar values to ours. Cox Automotive is also a family-owned company, plus we know many of the Cox Automotive UK and Manheim team as we’ve shared a site together at Bruntingthorpe for years. Our experience and expertise naturally complement that of Cox Automotive, and we believe it will be a perfect fit to help the business continue to grow.”
Forbes concluded: “We will take time to get to know and really understand this fantastic business. The talented CWL leadership team and all the employees are integral to its continued success, and I’m looking forward to working alongside them. With the backing of an international company like ours, we can ensure that they receive the necessary investment to keep growing and expanding. This acquisition will undoubtedly transform our business!”

The Buccaneer Aviation Group

As we are sure most of our followers are aware, there have been some major changes at Bruntingthorpe in the last few weeks and months.

Considering this and following recent discussion with David Walton, we as a group after 15 years plus of residency at Bruntingthorpe are currently making plans to be moving on to pastures new by the end of this year. The main aim of this is too enable us to continue to preserve and display the aircraft under their own power in the way we want too for everyone’s mutual enjoyment.

We are, as always very grateful to the Walton family for being allowed residency at Bruntingthorpe for so long and have participated in every Cold War jets open day with at least one of our three aircraft as part of the collection. And have been allowed to hold many of our own events to raise funds to allow us to maintain our aircraft and support other Buccaneer owners and groups throughout the U.K.

We have just completed a photo event with the support of Timeline Events and this is likely to be the last event we participate in at Bruntingthorpe.

Currently there are no plans for a Cold War Jets open day in May as far as we are aware.

We are currently considering two possible sites for a new home and this will be announced as soon as everything is confirmed with the management of the chosen site.

As you can imagine the cost of moving the aircraft, two Buccaneers and a Jet provost. Along with the ground equipment and spares cache is significant and we are currently working with several transport companies to make this as cost effective as possible.

Efforts to raise funds will of course redouble in the next few weeks and months with a blitz of social media to sell our existing merchandise, some Rolls Royce Spey engine blades and some other things like donated Buccaneer artwork.
There may also be a special print available of our aircraft available soon.

Of course our Buccaneer cockpit section XW550 is already booked for several events this year. Abingdon Air and Country show being the first.

All events we are attending will be announced via our Facebook page.

So please, please. visit us at these events, buy some merchandise there or Via our Facebook page to help us safeguard the future of the jets in our new home.
If you have any questions, suggestions and/or would like to offer support with regards to The Buccaneer Aviation Groups planned move please contact us via our Facebook page or website and we will respond as soon as possible.

A few follow up facts.
1) no they can’t fly out. So many reasons why.
2) It’s not our place to comment on the future of the airfield, future events or other aircraft or groups plans.
3) yes we are accepting donations and Mike Overs will be dealing with that in due course.
4) Where we will go is still under negotiation and although the move is confirmed the location is not.
We cannot be drawn on the location for obvious reasons.

Kind regards
For and on behalf of The Buccaneer Aviation Group

It is with regret that Bruntingthorpe Aviation has made the decision to cancel the Cold War Jets Fast Taxi Day that was provisionally planned for May 2020. This decision follows the latest guidance issued by HM UK Government in response to the outbreak of Covid-19. We thank all of our volunteers, supporters and enthusiasts for their continued support during these unprecedented times.

We remain hopeful that the August 2020 Cold War Jets Fast Taxi Day will go ahead and we will continue to keep our website ( https://www.bruntingthorpe.com/aviation/discover-explore/fast-taxi-days ) up to date in regards to this. If you have any queries please feel free to contact a member of our team. As part of our duty of care towards our own staff, many will be working from home so please be patient with any queries you may have.

Bruntingthorpe - An Update (26/03/20)

Important New Information re the Aviation services at Bruntingthorpe

Please note that, following an acquisition of C.Walton Ltd by Cox Automotive, the Aviation business and Cold War Jets Museum at the Bruntingthorpe site are now closed and will not re-open.

It is recognised that this may be concerning news to some aviation enthusiasts. Cox Automotive is an automotive services business who do not work within the aerospace sector. One of the previous owners of C.Walton Ltd, Mr David Walton, is currently investigating the construction of new buildings adjacent to the LPG ‘Q Shed’ to house some of the collection and safeguard their future on land excluded from the Cox Automotive lease. News of any progress on this front will be released by Mr Walton as and when available.

Subject to the COVID-19 situation at the time, it remains the intention of Cox Automotive to hold the planned Cold War Jets Fast Taxi Day in August. Further information on this will be released much closer to the date.

Please note that due to the COVID-19 situation there is no access to the site currently.

The new owners of Bruntingthorpe airfield, Cox Automotive, have noted that as the site is increasingly used by vehicles, they do not deem it safe for a landing. Existing aircraft at the site that can fly will be asked to leave.

Important New Information re the Aviation services at Bruntingthorpe - Updated 30.6.2020

Cox Automotive UK has recently been contacted about Aviation issues relating to the Bruntingthorpe site. We therefore wanted to share some background on the issue and provide an update to any interested parties.

“In March 2020, Cox Automotive UK acquired 100% of the share capital of C Walton Ltd (CWL). As part of this deal, Cox Automotive UK acquired CWL’s vehicle services business which operates from three locations in Bruntingthorpe (Leicestershire), Wyton (Cambridgeshire) and Long Bennington (Lincolnshire) plus CWL’s proving ground and events businesses which are also located at Bruntingthorpe.

“Cox Automotive is an automotive services business with no businesses or expertise within the aerospace sector. Following the completion of the acquisition, the Aviation business and the Cold War Jets Museum at Bruntingthorpe were closed and will not re-open.

“We recognise that this concern some aviation enthusiasts, and also appreciate the historic value of a number of the aircraft currently located on the site. However, it has never been the intention of Cox Automotive UK to scrap any of these planes and, as part of our deal, CWL is contractually responsible for these aircraft not Cox Automotive UK.

“Cox Automotive UK is working with Mr David Walton, one of the previous owners/directors of CWL, who is responsible for all matters relating to Aviation on the Bruntingthorpe site. Mr Walton is also responsible for engaging and working with any stakeholders on the site who may have been impacted as a consequence of the sale to Cox Automotive. Clearly, this is a complex and sensitive process given the number of aircraft on the site, and the diverse ownership of these.

“We are unable to comment on any specific aircraft or individual stakeholders impacted at this time, and this is being progressed by Mr Walton. However, we understand that Mr Walton is currently investigating the construction of new buildings to house some of the aviation collection and to safeguard their future on land on the Bruntingthorpe site that is excluded from the Cox Automotive UK lease.

“Any progress or updates on aviation issues at Bruntingthorpe will be released by Mr Walton. However, anyone wanting further information about aviation-related queries at Bruntingthorpe are encouraged to contact Mr Walton direct on dave@airfield-storage.com.

“Cox Automotive UK is also engaging with stakeholders on site and ensuring that access to the site is appropriately maintained and managed in line with current Government guidance.”

Cancellation of Cold War Jets open day August 2020

Following the acquisition of C.Walton Ltd and a lease of land at Bruntingthorpe by Cox Automotive UK Ltd. The August open day will not take place. This brings to an end many years of Cold War Jets Open days.

This news will be a huge disappointment to aviation enthusiasts across the UK and worldwide. Every aircraft based at Bruntingthorpe has its own unique and distinguished history which has been preserved by teams of dedicated volunteers.

Bruntingthorpe has been the focal point of UK jet aviation preservation for over 30 years. Many amazing aircraft have been saved, restored and maintained in fast taxi condition.
Some of the historic aircraft made their final flights into Bruntingthorpe, the last being Armstrong Whitworth Meteor NF11 WM167 in January 2019 and of course one returned to flight in the case of two Canberra’s, an ex Swiss hunter and of course Avro Vulcan XH558.

We the volunteers of the Cold War Jets Collection would like thank Mr David Walton for his continued support and hope you will support the future of aviation heritage at Bruntingthorpe.

STATEMENT RE AVIATION ACTIVITIES AT BRUNTINGTHORPE
-
Updated 24.07.2020

We confirm that the Aviation activities carried on at Bruntingthorpe were not acquired by Cox Automotive when they acquired the automotive vehicle services business of C Walton Ltd in March of this year. The Aviation activities, including responsibility for the historic aircraft, remain under the control of a Company owned by the former Directors of C Walton Ltd.

There are no plans to scrap any of the historic British aircraft currently onsite. We have reached agreement with a number of organisations to rehome several of the historic aircraft and are actively pursuing the possibility of establishing an aviation museum upon land adjacent to the Airfield at Bruntingthorpe, but there are a number of practical implications which will determine whether this will ultimately be viable.

As and when there is any further information we shall make further announcements, but in the meantime we confirm that whilst we are working with Cox Automotive upon the possibility of hosting aircraft adjacent to the main entrance gate house, they are not involved in the day to day aspects of managing the Aviation activities and attempting to safeguard the historic British aircraft.

STATEMENT TO CHANGE.ORG RE AVIATION ACTIVITIES AT BRUNTINGTHORPE

We wish to confirm that the statement given to you by Peter Bell of Cox Automotive UK on 25 June correctly represents the facts.

The Aviation activities, including responsibility for the historic aircraft, remain under the control of a Company owned by the former Directors of C Walton Ltd.

All further enquiries concerning the Aviation activities formerly carried out at Bruntingthorpe, and the historic aircraft, should be directed to Dave Walton at dave@airfield-storage.com.
