RIAT 2016 LATEST UPDATES
Mar 3rd, 2016 at 4:22pm

LATEST UPDATE: 03/03/16

The US Air Force has confirmed with us that it will be sending two F-35A Lightning II aircraft from the 56th Fighter Wing based at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona. These will join two F-35B vertical take-off and landing aircraft from the US Marine Corps, whose participation was announced last month.

The Spanish Air Force has confirmed that a Eurofighter EF2000 will participate in RIAT 2016. We are seeking confirmation on whether the aircraft will be in the flying display or in the static park.

The Royal Air Force has confirmed that the Red Arrows aerobatic team, the solo Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4, the Beech King Air (making a welcome return to the circuit in 2016 after a three-year absence), and the Lancaster, Hurricane and Spitfire of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will all participate in the RIAT 2016 flying display. Other RAF involvement is still in discussion.

LATEST UPDATE: 10/03/16

The Air Tattoo's flying display programme was boosted further this week with news that the Swedish Air Force is sending its solo Saab JAS 39 Gripen to Fairford this summer. The aircraft, which last appeared at RIAT in 2014, is expected to come from F7 Wing at Såtenäs.

LATEST UPDATE: 17/03/16

The Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy has confirmed that its helicopter display team, the Black Cats, will be appearing at the Air Tattoo for the first time in seven years. The team is again equipped with two examples of the Lynx HMA.8 maritime helicopter for the 2016 season after a year on the new Wildcat. Also being provided by the Navy are single examples of the Hawk T.1 and King Air Avenger, both for static display, from 736 and 750 Naval Air Squadrons respectively.

LATEST UPDATE: 24/03/16

We are continuing to work closely with representatives from the RAF, US Marine Corps and US Air Force and can confirm that it is the intention for RIAT 2016 to feature two USMC F-35Bs and one RAF F-35B. In addition, we're working with the USAF on plans to feature the Heritage Flight formation flypast on all three Air Tattoo days. The ambition is for this to comprise an F-35A, F-22 and a maximum of two historic airframes. More details to follow.

We are aware that many Air Tattoo visitors will be keen to see the F-35 Lightning II on the ground as well as in the air. We continue to work toward securing the appearance of at least one F-35 into the southside operational area, when possible, during periods over the three-day airshow.

Always a great supporter of the Air Tattoo, the Royal Netherlands Air Force looks set to return in force in 2016 with a quartet of heavies for the static display including a CH-47 Chinook helicopter, a C-130 Hercules and one of two Douglas KDC-10 tanker jets. They will also be joined by a Dornier 228 of the Netherlands Coastguard.
In addition to the Swedish Air Force JAS39C Gripen in the flying display, we can confirm there will also be an example of the twin-seat JAS 39D variant on static display.

SPECTACULAR FRENCH JET DISPLAYS CONFIRMED

Two of the most spectacular fast jet displays in Europe will be heading for RAF Fairford this summer thanks to the French Air Force!

The solo Dassault Rafale C multi-role fighter and Ramex Delta team, comprising two Dassault Mirage 2000N strike aircraft, will demonstrate their outstanding agility during the flying display.

Seen for the first time in Britain at RIAT 2015, Ramex Delta present a dynamic role demonstration of the delta-winged Mirage, consisting of various tactical manoeuvres representative of those used in combat.

The Mirage 2000N is the nuclear strike variant of the type, which also serves as an air defence fighter and a conventional strike platform. It forms part of France's Forces Aériennes Stratégiques (Strategic Air Forces), and is capable of delivering the French ASMP medium-range air-to-surface nuclear cruise missile, as well as conventional stores, in all weathers by day or night.

The Ramex Delta team hails from one of the world's most famous military aviation units: the famous 'Escadrille Lafayette'. It was formed a century ago in 1916 as part of the then French air arm, and consisted primarily at that time of American volunteer pilots. The name comes from the Marquis de Lafayette, a key figure in the French Revolution and the American Revolutionary War. Today the name is assigned to French Air Force unit Escadron de Chasse 2/4, based at Istres near Marseille.

On several previous occasions, the outstanding agility of Dassault's latest-generation Rafale has been demonstrated by French Air Force pilots at the Air Tattoo, often scooping at least one of the airshow's flying display awards. This swing-role combat jet has taken part in combat operations over Afghanistan, Libya, Iraq, Mali and Syria, and is also in service in carrier-borne form with the French Navy.

The example on display at the Air Tattoo will be a single-seat Rafale C stationed at Base Aérienne 113 Saint-Dizier. At the controls for the first time this year will be a new display pilot, Capitaine 'Marty' Martinez.

A rare visitor to the RIAT static park will be a Dassault Falcon DA20 ECM from 717 Squadron, Royal Norwegian Air Force. It is one of three such electronic countermeasures, calibration and VIP transport aircraft stationed with the unit at Gardermoen.

Excellent support is being provided to the RIAT 2016 flying display by the Italian Air Force. The hugely popular Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team, flying Aermacchi AT-339A (MB339 PAN) jet trainers returns, as does the solo Eurofighter F-2000A Typhoon display from the Reparto Sperimentale Volo flight test centre; the latter unit also provides an AgustaWestland HH-101A Caesar combat search and rescue helicopter for its British flying display debut. Another Italian Typhoon will be on show in the static park.

LATEST UPDATE: 14/04/16

Germany's three military air arms are between them providing no fewer than 13 aircraft for the 2016 Air Tattoo. The air force, the Luftwaffe, is scheduled to bring an in-service Airbus A400M for the first time, joined in the static display by its predecessor, a Transall C-160D, plus an Airbus A310 Multi-Role Tanker-Transport, four Eurofighter EF2000s (one from each Luftwaffe wing operating the type) and a Panavia Tornado. The German Army reprises its award-winning MBB Bo 105P helicopter display from last year, and sends a second example for the static park. Also on static display are three German Navy aircraft - a Lockheed P-3C Orion, a Dornier 228, and an Airbus EC135 training helicopter.

Textron Aviation will again bring a number of interesting special missions aircraft from its product range to the Air Tattoo this year. For the third year running, the Textron AirLand Scorpion tactical jet is due to appear, accompanied by a Beechcraft AT-6B Wolverine light attack aircraft, a Beechcraft King Air 350 special missions platform, and a Cessna 208 Caravan special missions aircraft. All will be part of the showcase section of the RIAT 2016 static display.

In 2015 we welcomed Qatar as the 55th nation to take part in the Air Tattoo since it began in 1971, this year we are looking forward to greeting our 56th nation - Croatia.

The Croatian Air Force's aerobatic display team Krila Oluje (Wings of Storm) will make its long-awaited and much anticipated UK display debut when the team's six Pilatus PC-9M turboprop trainers take to the skies at the Air Tattoo. In support, and appearing on static display, will be a Mil Mi-171Sh transport helicopter.

LATEST UPDATE: 28/04/16

The Belgian Air Component's spectacular F-16A MLU Fighting Falcon display, piloted by Cdt Tom 'Gizmo' De Moortel in his second season, is set to be one of the highlights in our flying display this summer. Belgium is also providing two contrasting aircraft for the static park: a C-130H Hercules transport and, for the first time at the Air Tattoo, an L-21B Super Cub used as a glider tug by the country's Air Cadets - one of four such aircraft flown by the Belgian Air Component.

We welcome back great friends of the show in the form of the Royal Jordanian Falcons, the national aerobatic team of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, with its four Extra EA300L high-performance aerobatic aircraft. The team has appeared regularly at the Air Tattoo since 1979, when it first attended with a pair of Pitts Specials. Its attendance helps perpetuate the long-lasting link between Jordan and the show, one highlighted by the fact of His Royal Highness Prince Feisal being Patron of the Air Tattoo's Flying Scholarships for Disabled People.

Welcome support comes once again from the Hungarian Air Force which will be sending a JAS 39 Gripen fighter for static display and, probably now nearing the end of its service life, an Antonov An-26 turboprop transport.

Adding a touch of nostalgia to our static park will be the Jet Provost T5 operated by Jet Aerobatics from East Midlands Airport.

The RAF has added another aircraft to our static display in the form of a Grob Tutor trainer from the Southampton University Air Squadron at Boscombe Down.

The United States Marine Corps is to boost its Air Tattoo presence by sending a KC-130J Hercules tanker to perform in the flying display on Friday and conduct a simulated aerial refuelling with one of the F-35B Lightning IIs.

The Turkish Air Force will send its spectacular Soloturk team flying the F-16C Fighting Falcon to participate our flying display. It is the third nation to send an F-16 demonstration to this year's show after Belgium and Greece.

It has been confirmed that a P-51D Mustang will take part in the USAF Heritage Flight formation at RIAT 2016 alongside an F-22A Raptor and F-35A Lightning II. The identity of the Mustang in question and its operator are still to be confirmed.

Flying in the display on the Friday of RIAT 2016 only will be the ex-Royal Air Force of Oman BAC Strikemaster Mk82A operated from Hawarden by North Wales Military Aviation Services, and flown by Mark Petrie.

An increasingly rare sight at airshows due to operational commitments, an RAF C-130J Hercules will appear in the RIAT 2016 static park. Brize Norton-based No 47 Squadron is providing the aircraft, which will wear special markings to celebrate the unit's centenary this year.

RIAT 2016's official celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Air Training Corps will include a gathering of six gliders and motorgliders operated by the Air Cadets through the ages. Exhibited at the eastern end of the showground will be historic Slingsby Kirby Cadet, Grasshopper, Sedbergh and Venture, and modern Grob Viking and Vigilant types.

Double Delight As Migs Head For Air Tattoo

One of the Cold War's most iconic fighter jets will be making a double appearance at this year's Air Tattoo.

MiG-29's from both the Polish Air Force and the Slovakian Air Force will be putting on flying displays at RIAT 2016. Their pilots will demonstrate the agility and power of this 1980's fighter, which has served around the world with over 30 nations.

Poland's 1. ELT (Tactical Squadron) will be bringing a MiG-29A to take part in the flying display, alongside the already announced Polish F-16C Tiger Demo Team and Team Orlik, making 2016 a bumper year for Polish participation.

In a rare appearance, the Slovakian Air Force will also be visiting the show with a MiG-29AS. The aircraft will feature in the flying display and will be joined by a MiG-29AS/UBS in the static line up; both from 1. Bojova Letka (Fighter Squadron). A Let L410 transporter will be supporting the MiGs and will feature in the static display.

The Slovakians last appeared at RIAT with a MiG-29 in 2012, then a static display. Prior to that the Slovakian Air Force had not sent one of the type since 1999.
