Dambusters Receive Final Honours

17 March 2014

The 'Dambusters', 617 Squadron, held their honours and awards ceremony on 14th March after their return to work on 1st March from their deployment to Afghanistan.

The Squadron received their Medals from Air Commodore Dave Waddington, The Tornado GR4 Force Commander. Fifty one Operational Service Medals, 7 Long service and Good Conduct medals, 2 Air Officer Commanding 1 Group Safety Commendations and a Diamond Jubilee medal were awarded.

Whilst on deployment, 617 Squadron were supporting 904 Expeditionary Air Wing and providing armed overwatch and aerial reconnaissance for coalition forces in Afghanistan. The Squadron returned from their final deployment to Kandahar air base in February after handing over to II (AC) Squadron, based at Marham.

Both 617 Squadron and 12 (Bomber) Squadron will disband on 28th March at RAF Lossiemouth. The Disbandment Parade will be reviewed by the Station's Honorary Air Commodore, The Duke of York.

The Dambusters will, however, reform as the first operational Lightning II Squadron's at RAF Marham in 2018.

Wing Commander David Arthurton, Officer Commanding 617 Squadron, said: "617 Sqn personnel served with distinction on operations and it is fitting to see their achievements being recognised with the presentation of medals today.
We are all looking forward to our Disbandment Parade on 28th March which will mark the end of this chapter of 617 Sqn's history, before the Squadron reforms in 2018 with the Lightning II."
