Harrier Farewell

Quote:
Due to the decision to retire the Harrier GR9 early, it is the JFH FCs intent to finish all Harrier flying with a flypast of 16 aircraft in diamond formation. The plan is to fly the formation at 1000' on the following route: Wyton, Wittering, Cranwell, Waddington, Scampton, Coningsby and Cottesmore.
The date will be the 15th Dec 10 with back up days of 14th and 16th, a weather call being made on Mon 13th. Timings are being aimed at commencing the flypasts at 1330hrs however if weather dictates then the time may flex."

Harrier’s final bow at Wittering

Harrier’s final bow at Wittering

Gary Parsons - 10-Dec-2010

December 10: The last few remaining Harriers based at RAF Wittering in Cambridgeshire left today for nearby RAF Cottesmore in Rutland, bringing to an end 41 years of vertical landing operations at the base.
Yesterday the final sorties were flown by 4(R) Squadron, the Operational Conversion Unit for the Harrier, with Sqn Ldr Duncan Mason performing a final bow to the station before landing the late afternoon sun.
Wing Commander Simon Jessett, Officer Commanding 4(R) Squadron, commented on the decision to retire the Harrier: "Intellectually we were prepared for it, but it was still a shock. We know the decision went to the wire, but it’s a sense of bereavement. I’ve been in the air force 20 years, 16 of those flying Harriers."
Eight Long Course students were affected when the decision was announced on October 20.
“On the day, it was them I felt most for,” said Wg Cdr Jessett. “They were suspended immediately. The air force guys have all gone to other aircraft, but the navy guys still don’t know what they will do next.”
There were four pilots from each air arm on the course. The same is for the instructors; the air force ones have been posted to other aircraft or staff jobs, but the navy pilots are still in limbo. “We’ve effectively returned to being an Army co-operation squadron again,” added Wg Cdr Jessett. “We’ve been supporting 3 Commando Brigade with their pre-Afghanistan training offering close air support.”
The last week has seen practice flights for the planned 16-ship flypast due to happen on December 15 at RAF Cottesmore.
The squadron will officially disband at RAF Cottesmore on January 28, the future of the famous number plate unknown. “We’d like to see it return on Joint Strike Fighter,” noted Wg Cdr Jessett, although he’d not be unhappy to see it as a Typhoon or Tornado unit.
As for Wittering itself, it will remain open as a flying station for the foreseeable future as a reserve landing ground for visitors and flying training requirements.

Uncertain future for Harrier pilots

Uncertain future for Harrier pilots
Friday, December 17, 2010

Royal Navy and RAF Harrier pilots face an uncertain future after the government revealed it is still reviewing the number it will retain following the decision to scrap the aircraft.
The decision to scrap the aircraft was made as part of the Strategic Defence and Security Review in October, with the Harrier being taken out of service and numbers of Tornado aircraft set to be reduced.
There are 135 Harrier pilots in the Royal Air Force and 53 in the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm.
Responding to a question from New Forest MP Julian Lewis, defence Minister Andrew Robathan said that the number of pilots retained would be subject to further discussion, although some pilots would be needed to help regenerate carrier strike capability in time for the launch of HMS Queen Elizabeth in 2020. "The number of RAF Harrier pilots who will be required to leave the service as a result of the withdrawal of that aircraft is the focus of detailed analysis regarding the wider issue of implementing the strategic defence and security review's outcomes including manning and supporting the front-line," Robathan told Parliament. "The number of Fleet Air Arm Harrier pilots that will be required to leave the Royal Navy is subject to ongoing work between the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force to determine how best to meet the requirement to regenerate a Carrier Strike capability in 2020. "Royal Navy Harrier pilots would not be required to leave the Naval Service before July 2012 unless they apply to leave earlier," he said. "Any pilot made redundant will receive the same standard retraining package offered to any service personnel made redundant and will qualify for graduated resettlement training. "In addition, any service personnel made redundant will receive compensation in the form of a lump sum in addition to normal entitlements to pensions and retirement benefits.
